Position Summary The Assistant Professor Computer Science at UNSW Bengaluru is an academic role responsible for contributing to the teaching and service missions of the School and Faculty while developing and delivering high-quality scholarly research and professional activities at national and international levels. The role is primarily in the area of Computer Science and Engineering, with a research focus on Databases and related areas, including Human-centric databases such as crowdsourced and collaborative database systems and Vector databases and high-dimensional databases for scientific discovery. The Assistant Professor should have strong expertise in Software Engineering, Computing, and Artificial Intelligence, with responsibilities spanning undergraduate teaching, research, scholarly activities, funding applications, and supporting students and colleagues. The role reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports. Preference will be given to global/international faculty with teaching experience outside of India. The faculty is expected to teach courses such as: Software Engineering Fundamentals Software Construction: Techniques and Tools Web Front-End Programming Natural Language Processing Database Systems Professional Issues and Ethics in Information Technology Indicative Areas of Expertise Computer Science & Computing Software Engineering Software Design & Architecture Software Construction & Development Data Structures & Algorithms Database Systems & Data Management Artificial Intelligence & Natural Language Processing Web Technologies & Front-End Programming Computing Systems Teaching and Learning Contribute to teaching in Computer Science and Engineering at the undergraduate level, including Software Engineering, Software Construction, Web Technologies, Natural Language Processing, Database Systems, and Professional Issues and Ethics in Information Technology. Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning. Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policies. Design and develop learning activities and resources, and provide assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments. Initiate the development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics. Support students learning progression through one-to-one consultations and cohort-based course-related advice to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes. Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance. Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge, and minimum professional accreditation requirements, where relevant. Research Conduct research in Computer Science and related areas, with expertise in one or more areas such as Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Database Systems, Web Technologies, or Computing Systems. Engage in individual and/or collaborative research consistent with disciplinary practice. Create scholarly impact recognised by peers through the advancement of disciplinary knowledge. Conduct research and scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team. Design and undertake research projects. Contribute to the development of competitive funding applications under the guidance of senior colleagues. Participate as a co-investigator or chief investigator in competitive grant applications. Mentor and guide students and colleagues through appropriate research supervision and mentoring activities. Academic Service and Engagement Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars. Be a member of School/Faculty committees as required. Contribute to the academic and service missions of the School and Faculty. Engage in individual and collaborative activities consistent with disciplinary practice. Support student learning and progression at undergraduate level. Compliance and Safety Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Code of Conduct and Values. Qualifications & Selection Criteria Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Computing, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university. Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery at undergraduate level. Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence. Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning is desirable. Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Demonstrated capability to conduct research in Databases and related areas. Ability to conduct research and scholarly activities independently or as a member of a research team. Ability to design research projects and contribute to competitive funding applications. Ability to create scholarly impact recognised by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge. Ability to mentor and guide students and colleagues. Demonstrated ability to contribute to teaching in relevant areas of Computer Science, without implying that one individual is expected to teach across all listed subject areas.
