Job Description

About Aegis Ventures Aegis Ventures is a next-generation startup studio that partners with entrepreneurs and industry leaders to originate, launch, and scale transformative companies, with a focus on artificial intelligence. The Aegis platform brings together market-shaping ideas, permanent growth capital, and ambitious individuals who are driven to solve major societal problems. Our companies use technology to transform healthcare by dramatically improving quality, access, and cost. Aegis creates new companies with substantial input from our Digital Consortium of a dozen leading health systems and other ecosystem partners. We have launched 6 innovative companies to date and are just getting started. About the Role As the Chief of Staff at Aegis Ventures, you will work directly with John Beadle, Aegis’s Co-Founder and Managing Partner, as his closest day-to-day partner and a key member of the Aegis leadership team. The job is ultimately to become a true extension of John and make him and Aegis more effective. That will require staying close enough to John’s day-to-day work to absorb context, anticipate what needs to happen, communicate in his voice, and make sure important priorities keep moving. The Chief of Staff will sit at the center of Aegis’s work as we launch new companies, scale our existing portfolio, pursue larger strategic transactions, and work alongside leading health systems and leaders across healthcare, technology, and investing. The role offers an unusually broad view into the information, relationships, and decisions that shape both Aegis and the companies we build. The role is both highly strategic and highly tactical. Aegis is not simply an investor; we are hands-on builders of the companies we create. On a given day, the Chief of Staff may help John think through a new company, financing, partnership, or organizational question and then draft the email, make the introduction, coordinate the relevant people, and make sure every follow-up happens. The same person needs to be genuinely excited to do both. The scope will not always be neatly defined. Often, there will not be a playbook or even a fully specified project. The Chief of Staff may be given a problem, an objective, or sometimes just an incomplete thread and will need to figure out what should happen next, involve the right people, and drive the work forward. This requires someone who is highly independent and comfortable with ambiguity, but who also has the judgment to know when to act, when to ask for input, and when to escalate. We view this role as a 24-month apprenticeship in company building, investing, and leadership. Our current Chief of Staff is moving into a senior role within Aegis’s corporate development team, and her predecessor currently serves as our Head of Operations. Those transitions reflect how we think about the role: someone who excels should have the opportunity to take on significantly broader responsibility across Aegis and our portfolio. Depending on the individual and the needs of the firm, that could include investing, new-company formation, a broader leadership role at Aegis, or an operating role within one of our portfolio companies. What You’ll Do Serve as a trusted thought partner to John, helping identify what matters most, get quickly to the crux of important questions, pressure-test the alternatives, and recommend a path forward. Make sure John’s highest-priority work moves forward. Clarify decisions, establish owners and timelines, resolve blockers, and close loops without waiting for repeated direction. Develop and retain deep context across John’s priorities, relationships, meetings, and commitments so you can anticipate needs, prepare for and attend selected meetings, and increasingly handle matters on his behalf when appropriate. Draft and, where appropriate, send communications that reflect John’s voice and judgment, including emails, introductions, follow-ups, memos, presentations, and updates to investors, partners, and portfolio companies. Prepare John for critical board, investor, partner, customer, recruiting, and executive conversations with concise context, a clear point of view, and a recommended outcome. Partner with John to advance priorities across new-company formation, portfolio strategy, financings, strategic partnerships, executive recruiting, organizational development, and firm- building, owning the analysis, coordination, communications, and follow-through required to move each one forward. Build strong working relationships across Aegis, its portfolio companies, investors, health-system partners, and other external stakeholders, using judgment and influence to bring the right people together and move work forward. Create simple, reliable systems for managing priorities, information, relationships, and commitments, and use AI wherever it can materially improve the speed or quality of the work. Move easily between high-level strategic work and detailed execution, taking ownership of whatever will most increase John’s and Aegis’s effectiveness. That may mean developing an important strategic analysis or making sure an introduction is made, a commitment is kept, or a decision becomes reality. What You’ll Need Typically 3–7 years of professional experience, although demonstrated capability, judgment, and rate of growth matter far more than tenure. Most likely has experience in private equity, growth equity, venture capital, public-markets investing, or top-tier strategy consulting. We are also open to candidates from other demanding environments, including a founder’s office, investment banking, or an early-stage operating role, who demonstrate the same level of judgment, analytical rigor, and ownership. Exceptionally smart, ambitious, and intellectually curious. Learns quickly, sets a very high bar for their own work, and wants to take on more responsibility as quickly as they can earn it. Exceptional judgment and the ability to get quickly to the crux of an unfamiliar issue, distinguish signal from noise, form an independent view with incomplete information, and anticipate downstream implications. An exceptional writer and communicator who can turn complex or unfinished thinking into clear, concise, and persuasive communications and learn to draft naturally in John’s voice. High agency and low ego. Gets genuine satisfaction from making the people and organizations around them more effective. Naturally identifies what needs to happen, finds a way to get it done, and is as willing to take care of an important detail as to help shape a major decision. Unusually organized, responsive, and reliable, with the energy and capacity to manage a significant volume of work in a fast-moving environment. Preserves context, remembers commitments, anticipates downstream needs, and consistently closes loops. Excellent interpersonal instincts and the confidence and discretion to earn trust and engage credibly with founders, investors, board members, senior executives, and teammates at every level. A genuine interest in artificial intelligence, healthcare, investing, and company creation, as well as comfort using the latest AI tools to make the work faster and better. Prior healthcare experience is not required. Compensation & Benefits $200,000 - $215,000 base salary, with a target annual cash bonus of 20%. Direct equity grants in each new company launched by Aegis during your tenure, giving you the opportunity to share directly in the long-term value of the companies you help build. Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, and commuter benefits. The final offer will reflect the candidate’s experience, capabilities, and other relevant business considerations. Location This role is based in Aegis’s New York City office and is in person, reflecting the close day-to-day nature of the work. Aegis Ventures is a proud Equal Opportunity Employer — we recruit, train, compensate and promote our team members based on qualifications. We encourage you to apply regardless of your race, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, veteran status, or any other applicable legally protected characteristics.
